A good alphabet chart is what you need if you are going to begin to teach letter recognition. Some charts available have beautiful elaborate pictures on them but actually do not work well when initially teaching the alphabet. For instance often you will see and owl picture accompanying the letter ‘ o’ but this is not what you need if you are trying to teach the sound for this letter. The beginning sound in ‘owl’ is not the sound of the letter ‘o’. On our chart we have ‘orange’ and clearly the beginning sound in ‘orange’ is the sound ‘o’.

Use the chart to teach your child that letters have names and sounds. The traditional alphabet song teaches the names but by extracting the first sound in the name of the objects on our Reading For Sure Alphabet chart they will find out the sounds of the letters and it is these sounds that we use to read and say a word.
